You can use Apple's Mail program to access your hotmail account with this app...
http://www.automagic-software.com/products.php#httpmail

If you use hotmail as your main email program then why bother using Apples Mail? ...just launch your browser and if you have it set right your password/sign in name will be remembered, then it's as simple as one click to see your new messages.

Apples's Mail client is only helpful if you plan on using your computer to store and manage your emails - as opposed to doing things remotely with Hotmail's server. That's why Hotmail is not imap or pop - but rather http based.

If your internet provider gives you pop mail accounts (and you decide to use them) then yes, use Mail to access those. If you're happy with Hotmail, then you don't really need to concern yourself with Apple's Mail client.
