Jul 13, 2016 7:20 PM in response to NewbMacUserby NewbMacUser,I just don't want to use a 3rd party app to transfer files as I only trust Apple.
When I transfer files from my PC to my iPad Mini 3, do I NEED to use the iTunes app to transfer files? Can I just copy and paste files using Windows Explorer so when I connect an external USB HDD?

Jul 13, 2016 7:30 PM in response to NewbMacUserby deggie,No, the reason that iOS is secure is that it is sandboxed and it has no user accessible filesystem. If you want to copy and paste files in the manner you suggest you need to get a Surface or Android tablet. iOS will not meet your needs.

Jul 13, 2016 7:37 PM in response to deggieby MichelPM,If the OP is this paranoid about security and privacy, Android and Windows devices are even more virus ridden and definitely less secure than iOS.
-
Jul 13, 2016 7:39 PM in response to MichelPMby deggie,Sure, I know that, but the OP thinks the simplest method of transfer gives the best security. Sort of like leaving your front door open when you go get groceries so you want have to unlock the door while carrying a bunch of bags.

Jul 13, 2016 8:00 PM in response to NewbMacUserby Phil0124,About File Sharing on iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch - Apple Support
You can copy files between your computer and apps on your iOS device using File Sharing. For example, you can create a document in Pages on your iPad, then copy it to your Mac so that you can open it in Pages for OS X.
And no, it does not involve an internet connection at all. and yes you must use iTunes.
The same security that prevents you from copying files directly through windows explorer os what makes iOs devices inherently more secure than windows or android can ever hope to be.

Is it possible to make iTunes "function offline" so that's it's not able to contact the internet at all? What's to stop iTunes from sending data to Apple regarding what files I'm transferring between the iPad Mini 3 and Windows PC through the USB cable?
-
Jul 13, 2016 8:33 PM in response to NewbMacUserby NewbMacUser,My last question: Is transferring files using the USB cable the most secure way to transfer files between iPads/Macs/PCs???
I don't think I'm being paranoid as I'm just wanting to make sure it's secure.

Jul 13, 2016 8:33 PM in response to NewbMacUserby deggie,Yes, turn off your WiFi connection on your computer and if you are using an Internet connection unplug it.
-
Jul 13, 2016 8:36 PM in response to NewbMacUserby deggie,Yes it is and if you are using an secured network in your house that is not connected to the internet and you've set up security and a strong password that is also very secure. But yeah, you are being paranoid.
But none of them are totally secure. If your house and computer are not secured with lead or other radio wave security it is possible for someone to use tools and capture information that is transferred from your device to your computer (or vice versa) by parking by your house and reading the data on your computer.

Yes, Turn off your internet connection. Unplug your computer from the internet.
And Yes you are being extremely paranoid. What makes you think iTunes is sending information about what you transfer back to Apple, and what makes you think Apple even cares what you transfer?

Jul 13, 2016 9:28 PM in response to Phil0124by LACAllen,This is the poster's second such thread.
The tone of the other thread was that he/she wishes to transfer some content that he/she does not want exposed to the internet.
Fair enough.
The last thread had an element of trolling to it. The OP was give assurances this activity would be safe from the web, but did not seem to believe us.

Jul 14, 2016 4:21 AM in response to NewbMacUserby NewbMacUser,Woah, the users in this community are really knowledgeable. Thanks so much!
This problem I'm having is a genuine concern I have and I can assure you I'm not trolling at all.
-
Jul 14, 2016 6:00 AM in response to NewbMacUserby LACAllen,Then why don't you accept the advice given you several times on each thread?
Your reluctance to accept what people, are saying at face value suggests two things to me. You are trolling or you are doing something illegal, unethical or immoral and don't wish to be caught.
Nobody expects you to detail what you are trying to do, but being so afraid of the internet knowing your business stands out. You stated earlier you only trust Apple, but then not those who volunteer to help fellow Apple users.

Jul 14, 2016 7:51 AM in response to NewbMacUserby Phil0124,How much more assurance do you need? Asking the same question over and over again, and this fear of the internet you seem to have is less than normal.
Several different people telling you the same things. itunes does not transfer anything back to Apple.
But if you need to be sure, yes again unplug your computer form the internet. That's the easiest way to avoid any connections during transfer.
@LACAllen
Thanks. Must have missed the first one. And having read the other one, this extreme need of privacy is starting to feel suspect

I can assure you I'm not doing anything illegal at all... I'll be transferring some of my work files and I just want to know that the connection to my iPad is 100% secure. Apple is the company I trust above Google and even Microsoft.
