I am unable to change my password in El Capitan for an imap email account. I just changed the password for that email account and can find no place to change it in the mail app.

Check under Mail - Accounts
The account has been set up for months, but I have changed the password with the provider. This field is not present to change the password in Apple mail for imap account. It is present for others.
Then it probably is pulling it in from the information on the web portal or somehow trying to authenticate there
Delete the account in mail - this does not delete the account with the provider
Reboot the computer
Re install the Mail account - see if that helps
I am still receiving all mail on the account now, even though I have not changed it on my MacBook Pro! I am hesitant to delete the account since I am not actually having a problem sending and receiving.
Then your password is accurate and you should not worry -

The default for iCloud is not to use a password, but to use an Apple-token. This is generated automatically and saved in your keychain.
As long as it is still working, you have no problem, and there is no need to change anything.

Use
Mail > Window > Connection Doctor
if any lights are red, clciking on the red light will take you right to the settings for the server (Sender or Receiver) that needs attention. This allows you to see them separately while the rest of Mail makes it difficult to see and get at each side independently.
