Q: Slow MBP since yosemite, still with el capitan

Hi team,

I have a mid-2012 MBP, i5, 4 GB ram, running El Capitan 10.11.4 (15E65). My macbook has been slow since the upgrade to Yosemite, and has not improved with El Cap. This is most noticeable when starting up, waking from sleep, and especially starting apps/opening files. Usually once an app is open things run pretty good, but can have a few minutes of slow response to typing etc. One of the worst is powerpoint (fair enough) which will bounce up and down for a good two minutes, then another 2 minutes to open a file, but really all apps are affected with startup. Spotlight is beyond slow, it takes minutes to load results. Any help or thoughts are greatly appreciated

In general it is not a good idea to upgrade a system that is not working well. Usually it will not improve anything or even make things worse.

That being said: the symptoms you describe can be caused by third party software (esp. 'cleaners', anti-virus software) or by a failing hard disk. If you like, you can post an Etrecheck report: http://etrecheck.com/. It will give an overview of your system and the software that is installed.

Yeah I know, I was hoping El Cap would fix the issues...

You're running a bit low on RAM. But the long runtime of Etrecheck suggests the hard drive might be failing. Keep good care of that Time Machine backup.

If you open Console (in Utilities folder), you can check if the logs in the 'All Messages' section contain lines with "I/O error" in it. If so, then you should replace the hard disk.

Thanks! I don't have any messages that have I/O error in them as far as I can tell.

Tough question, but is it common for a hard drive to start failing less than two years after I bought it (i got it new btw)?

I've had a hard drive failing on the first day.

But usually they last five or more years... Did the slowness start immediately after you installed the drive?

I have never changed the hard drive. It was fine when I got it, then got slower after Yosemite and still slow in El Cap. Maybe I'll have to swing by an apple store.

Your Spotlight seems to be a little crazy.  Maybe you should give re-indexing your file system a try

When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.

Launch the Console application in any one of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

              SYSTEM LOG QUERIES All Messages

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

              View Show Log List

from the menu bar at the top of the screen.

Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.

Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.

Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

When you post the log extract, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the text on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

If you have an account on Pastebin, please don't select Private from the Paste Exposure menu on the page, because then no one but you will be able to see it.
