Burning a DVD - so retro! There are a few solutions but the ones I know are bought. The main thing is that you actually need to"author" the DVD for it to play on a regular DVD player.

1. Roxio Toast will author DVD's and convert the avi file.

2. if you have iLife the you can use iMovie and iDVD

both of these have worked well for me. You could also try this free on:

3. Open source software Burn.

Good luck.

You need to create a video DVD disk with a video DVD authoring application like iDVD. However, iDVD has been discontinued and unsupported for a couple of years. It still is the more comprehensive and professional type of app available.

If you want iDVD purchase a copy of the iLife 09 disk from a 3rd party retailer like Amazon.com or eBay.com and instal iDVD from it.

Otherwise go to the App Store and do a search for DVD. You'll find a number of possibilities, some free and others reasonably priced.

You will need special DVD authoring software to make TV-playable DVDs. You can see if you can find iDVD on old iLife discs somewhere. Apple stopped distributing it several years ago. I don't know if iDVD can handle AVI directly since AVI is an older Windows format. You may have to go through a second, intermediate conversion stage which will lose even more quality.
