Q: previous back and forth messages not showing up on new macbook pro

After purchasing two new MacBooks (Macbook pro retina (early 2015) and MacBook 12 (early 2016) both running Version 10.11.4)  I initiate the setup using my Apple ID and all my back and forth iMessages appeared.  After 4 months they re-imaged my SSD when i initialized the macbook this time with my same apple ID my back and forth messages failed to appear.  Apple support said the shouldn't appear why did they twice before?   That response fails to match my previous experience.  my fear is something is not working properly with the new imaged drive.  Has anyone else experienced this?

MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch,Early 2015), OS X El Capitan (10.11.4)

    If you transferred the content from the old drive to the new - the messages should have come with that

    But my understanding is that iMessages are usually not stored someplace where they sync and download to your device

    A few minutes to hours of messages may show up but beyond that - not sure that it is expected or possible

    Content was not transferred the Apple Store just re-imaged the drive I guess maybe I didn't pay attention to the dates/time that showed up before.  Thanks
