can't load samples into keyboard

I've watched a few tutorials about this issue and they can load them into garageband and simply drag and drop the sample into the keyboard so that you can play your own melodies. The tutorials are using the garageband 11 as I am so I'm not sure what the issue would be. I'm running an old imac desktop mac os x version 10.6.8.

What am I doing wrong?
