How to clear a dead phone

I received my replacement phone which came with return instructions requiring the phone to be cleared for security purposes. How do I clear a phone that won't turn on?

Absolutely no. If it won't turn on, it's unlikely that it can access the Internet.

Yes and yes.

Why does one need to change the password, since the iPhone is dead.

If the iPhone is enable to boot then the Erase will occurs.

No and no. If the device is dead, how does it go online to allow the erase?

According to your instructions:

After you set a device to erase

  • If your device is online, the remote erase begins. A confirmation email is sent to your Apple ID email address.
  • If your device is offline, the remote erase begins the next time it’s online.
