Q: Safari 6.1.6 crashes at Google Maps

Today Safari 6.1.6/Mac OS 10.7.5/Mac Pro started crashing at Google Maps. All other sites work fine. Tried the usual fixes (reset etc.) but no relief. If I go to a page like a hotel reservation where a Google map comes up to the side, no crash, but I DO get an alert to "upgrade" to Google Chrome. Hmmm… Tried it a while back, too invasive. Mapquest, Bing, and Here work fine also.

In the crash log the first line mentions Javascript if that helps. If you turn off Javascript, the page does not load and just tells you to turn it on.

Anyone else?

I sent feedback to Google. Hard to find as they say use the menu, but of course you can't get that far. At "Was this article helpful," click No. Maybe if a few more do that they'll look into it, but I doubt it. I mentioned this discussion so maybe they'll take notice.

I tried several other ways in but none worked.

Adobe Flash auto- updated over the weekend and i was hoping it may cure it but…..nada, still the same. I also noticed that around the same time as this google map problem, the reply and comments are missing/non-functional on a couple of news media websites.

Like i said earlier, i,m using Opera more and more now as i doubt this Safari bug will be fixed.

I have the same trouble as everyone else. I noticed the crashing May 15th. Firefox works.

I, too, am one of those who cannot upgrade my version of OS X because of hardware limitations, so I'm happily using OS X 10.7.5 and Safari 6.1.6 (until several days ago) when Google maps started crashing Safari.  I guess I'll move to Firefox and move all my bookmarks to Firefox as well.

Same here, 10.9.5 with Safari 7.0.6.

Frustrating, I find Google maps in Firefox is less clear than in Safari. And indeed, to open Firefox as well is more work.

I have another curious new development with Safari 6.1.6 on OS X 10.7.5. This started after the problems with Google Maps. Surfing with Safari on a MacBook Pro laptop, now, when I two-finger tap (right-click) the trackpad, I get the spinning beachball for several seconds, then the right-click menu appears and immediately disappears. My right-click function works on the desktop and of course, it works perfectly well in Firefox. The only place it hangs and doesn't function well is in Safari. I've already set my default to Firefox. I'm inclined to follow FL Johnson's advice, move all my bookmarks to Firefox and abandon Safari altogether. Too many bugs… too many problems. Just to reiterate, the problem with Google Maps is not Google's problem. It works perfectly well with other browsers. The problem here is with Safari and Apple's lack of concern or respect for its longterm customers utilizing what many of us consider to be more flexible and feature-rich legacy versions of OS X.

    HI

I have had this problem too. I can still use google maps now by using the lie version. ONly problem is that you have to be in maps to switch to the lite version…. unless you use a link… here is one based on the UK

Thanks for this tip. Google Maps Lite works for me in Safari 6.1.6 with OS 10.7.5.

This link takes you to the lite version: https://www.google.com/maps/?force=lite

That feels better.  Thanks for the tip.  I can get Google Maps Lite on my Mac.  No crashing.  Seems to be working OK on my OS X 10.7.5 with Safari 6.1.6.  However, I too, am getting the beach ball at other random times, and the 'Comments' from the Daily Mail Online newspaper are no where to be seen.  I can live without that.  Cheers everyone.

Thanks for this info. Its a drag that you cannot make the lite version the default. Does anyone have an idea how to make it the default.?

I suppose i could have a direct link in my favs bar.

I wish Safari and every other browser would crash when the Daily Mail Online is opened.

My plan is to use the lite version (h/t thehelpagency) and/or MapQuest, and check every now and then for a fix (unlikely). They changed the code once, they may inadvertently fix it with another change.

    Thanks to all for responding!

I was in the middle of using Google Lite…(sadly, still prefer the full version). I also found out that Chrome has also stopped support for OS 10.7.5 too..(what the heck is wrong with these folks).

Anyway, I'm not sure if this may be the reason why Google Maps crashes…but I went to see their requirements...

    Browsers

To use the full Google Maps with 3D imagery and Earth view, you need the latest version of one of these browsers:

Note: If you're using Google Chrome, make sure to turn on hardware acceleration by going to Menu > Settings >Show advanced settings > Under "System", check the box next to "Use hardware acceleration when available."

    Operating systems

To use the full Google Maps with 3D imagery and Earth view, you need the latest version of one of these operating systems:

    • Mac OS 10.8.3 and up               <==============
    • Windows 7 and up
    • Chrome OS with an Intel CPU
    • Linux

Not really certain if i'm right…just my 2 cents...

I downloaded the Lite version, saved it to a bookmarks file after naming it Google Maps Lite, and dragged the bogus "heavy" version into the trash. It now seems like the Lite version has become the default. Real estate pages that use Google Maps have called up the Lite version, and it seems to run OK for now. Hope this helps.
