Q: iPod Touch 5 - Shuts off during boot up

iPod Touch 5th gen - iOS 9 (9.3.1 I believe).

A few days ago my iPod Touch battery died and shut off, so I plugged it up like normal, it went to the lock screen, then shut off. Ever since then, when I try to turn it back on, the Apple logo shows up for about 5-10 seconds then it just shuts off. I have tried letting the battery drain completely by clamping the power button down for 24+ hours and then plugging it in, but the same thing happens. I've tried letting it charge for 24+ hours, but that didn't fix it either. iTunes on my PC won't recognize it because it doesn't boot up all the way, and my home button is broken so I'm unable to attempt entering DFU mode. Even if I could enter DFU/Recovery mode, I really, really, REALLY do NOT want to have to restore it because 1. It would be a major pain to get all my data back, and 2. I don't have a recent backup.

So I don't really know what else to try. Could it possibly be that the battery has failed? It's quite old and hardly holds a charge any more. If I were to get the home button replaced and am able to get it into DFU mode, is there anything I could do to fix it without restoring?

It has never been jailbroken or modified. I hadn't done anything out of the ordinary with it before this happened, it just occurred out of the blue.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

    - See my first reply on page 1 in this discussion for how to plave the iPod in Recovery mode using a computer app. Note that this will erase the iPod.

    - Have you tried n another computer? With another cable?

Otherwise your only hope is contact a data recovery company.

I've tried multiple cables but it doesn't boot up enough for the computer to recognize it.

Surely something can be done that doesn't involve erasing all my data? If I were to get the battery replaced, is it possible that the removal of the battery would have the same effect of a hard reboot?

I've spent a lot of time seeing up the iPod with all my apps, music, photos, settings, etc. and I'd really like to try and find a way to fix it before resorting to wiping it.

Does anyone have any idea how this could have happened? Nothing was changed software-wise and that's kind of making me think that maybe it has something to do with the battery...

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

You asked "If I were to get the battery replaced, is it possible that the removal of the battery would have the same effect of a hard reboot?"

Very likely yes.  However, you may have a software glitch and a restore/erase may be required

So I opened up the iPod to try disconnecting/reconnecting the battery. That didn't do anything, but I was able to fix the home button while I had it open.

I put it into recovery mode and tried "forcing" an update by downloading the firmware then shift-clicking the update button. iTunes gets to "Verifying the update..." then it says "This iPod (iPod) could not be restored due to an unknown error (27)".

Is there any hope of getting the update to work? If not, is it possible to at least extract my photos while it's in recovery mode?

Error 27 points to aa hardware problem:

    Check for hardware issues

If you see error 53, learn what to do. If you see one of the errors below, you might have a hardware issue:
    1, 3, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 16
    20, 21, 23, 26, 27, 28, 29, 34, 35, 36, 37, 40, 56
    1002, 1004, 1011, 1012, 1014, 1667 1669
    Here's what to check:
Make sure that you have the latest version of iTunes.
Check for issues with third-party security software.
Make sure that your USB cable, computer, and network are reliable. Then try twice more to restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod.
If you still see the error message, you can check for outdated or modified software or contact Apple support.

I've updated iTunes, restarted my PC, tried different cables in different USB ports, disabled my anti-virus, and ran iTunes in Admin mode. Nothing has worked, it gives error 27 every time. Maybe a part in the iPod failed? I doubt that it's my PC/cable.

The iPod is now locked in recovery mode as well. If I could get my photos back, then I'd go ahead with a restore as my music is mirrored on my PC and I don't care about app-data too much.

I saw a few posts somewhere saying that when iTunes does a restore, it automatically creates a backup and then gives you the option to restore using that backup? Is that true? It doesn't sound likely but I don't have any other ideas...

    Thanks!

Go to iTunes>Preferences>Devices and look to see if a backup is listed. There should be a date for the backup listed to.

The last backup was made in January.

What I meant in my last post was, if I were to restore my iPod now, would iTunes create a backup before deleting everything? I just saw it on a forum somewhere, and I have my doubts, but it's worth checking into I guess.

No, not with the iPod in Recovery mode. When in Recovery mode the iPod is essentially erased.

Well, I don't know what else to try...

I've seen and tried a few programs which advertise that they are able to extract data while the device is in DFU mode, but none of them worked of course...

I don't have any once in a lifetime photos on there or anything, but I sure do hate to loose 3 months worth of pictures...

I looked into that but the prices that they charge are quite high, at least the ones I checked.

I found a program called FonePaw that looks like it might work, but it needs the device to be in DFU mode. I've been trying to get TinyUmbrella to work but the latest version doesn't show an "Exit Recovery" button, and the older versions won't detect when it's plugged in.

I also tried force updating the firmware on another PC and got the same Error 27. I hope I didn't mess something up when I disconnected the battery... It wasn't soldered on like I thought it would be, but instead was attached with adhesive. When I removed it, part of the thin connector tore, but I was able to get it back into place.

I conclude you have a hardware problem as error 27 tends to indicate. You can try a third-party repair place. Apple will not help since you took it apart

It's been out of warranty for years anyway. I'll keep on trying to find a solution, maybe I'll get lucky.

Thanks for all the help, lllaass!
