May 5, 2016 7:26 PM in response to Dmill60by Niel,1. Click here, install the DVD, and run Software Update.
2. After #1, open the Mac App Store and try downloading El Capitan. If you get told that it's incompatible with your computer, go to the online Apple Store and order a download code for Lion 10.7.
Mac OS X 10.7 and newer don't support PowerPC software such as Microsoft Office 2004. If you upgrade the OS, back up the computer first.

May 5, 2016 8:09 PM in response to Dmill60by Carolyn Samit,★HelpfulI understand that part... what I wanted you to check were the "requirements" for El Capitan before you purchased a disc.
OS X El Capitan requires one of the following Mac models and versions of OS X. It also requires at least 2GB of memory and 8.8GB of storage space.
- iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
- MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, Early 2009, or newer)
- MacBook Pro (Mid 2007 or newer)
- MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
- Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
- Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
- Xserve (Early 2009)
As Niel states. You would need an external optical drive, not to mention upgrade to Snow Leopard v10.6 before you can upgrade to El Captain. But there's no point in doing any of that if your Mac doesn't meet El Capitan requirements above.
