The Twitter app gets lots of irrelevant promoted tweets which I have to constantly block.
The Twitter app on my Macbook Air gets almost NO irrelevant promoted tweets at all.
Why is this?
Is there a setting somewhere on the iPad I need to change?

That would be a question for Twitter. It controls the content. But, no, there is no settings specifically on the phone that impacts that. You can check your account settings, but not much chance you can stop of slow them down.
But my question is, why does the Twitter app on the iPad get loads of spam tweets, but the twitter app on my Macbook does not? It's the same twitter account, so why the difference?
You'll have to ask Twitter that, at least in terms of why. How? Two different client platforms with different UI functionality. (I rarely use the web interface, but actually tend to get more "promoted" posts in it than the iOS version, and they tend to be different).
It's possible that any adblock program you have blocks those tweets from showing up in your browser vs in the app.
I avoid them by using a third party twitter app.
(of course when I do have to experience them I often take joy in reporting them as spam, because that's what they are to me)
I'm actually using the Twitter app on my Macbook rather than the browser, but maybe there's a link.
I haven't got an ad blocker on the iPad, so I'll enable one and see if that cures the problem!
