Q: My macbook pro will not allow me to login with my admin account

Hi,

Hopefully somebody can help me out. My macbook pro is a 2006 17 inch 2.4 ghz running El Capitain.

Today I shutdown my mac with no signs of anything wrong. Now that I have restarted it, it will no longer log me in with my admin account.

When the login screen comes up, I get two options - to sign in with mine (which is the only made account on my mac) and guest user. I can see my normal background all blurred out (which is normal for the login screen), and I do have the option to login with my password. However, when I do attempt to login with my password, it seems to try to login (the password box goes away and the little spinning circle pops up), the screen goes black for maybe ten seconds or so (seemingly like I'm going to my home screen) and it comes right back to my login screen, showing my account and the guest user account as my two options.

My mac is allowing me to access the user account (though none of my data is on there), and I can login with my admin name and password under the users section of system preferences, so it is recognizing my account to some degree.

I also tried holding shift during its boot to get into a safe boot, and the same stuff happened - I couldn't login with my admin account but could use the guest user.

If anyone could help me out with this, it would be a lifesaver.

Thank you for responding to me, I really do appreciate it. Sadly for me, it didn't work though. I used the guest user account and changed my main password, and nothing changed. I'm still stuck on it sending me back to the login start-up screen after trying to sign me in.

I should also add this to see if it helps in someone being able to help me out. After I had updated the password and it didn't work, I went back into the guest user account and set the preferences to automatically log my admin account in after start-up. So what happened from that was that my mac tried to log in as normal - grey screen with logo and status loading bar, but when that left the screen it just loaded up to a black screen with a white arrow-cursor. I could move the cursor around and the keyboard lights up, but it's just a black screen. I had to reboot in safe mode to get the option to login with a different account again, and now I'm back to booting up to the login screen and having it try to load my admin account just to send me back to the login screen. The root account is working, the guest user account is working and I made another admin account that is loading up and working, but my main admin account that has all of my files accessible won't load up and I am at a complete loss.
