iPhone 5C has difficulty connecting to cable

When I plug the charging cable into my iPhone 5C sometimes it will either not establish a connection, or the connection will "flicker" on and off. I suspect a mechanical problem - possibly dust or residue in the female connector of the phone - but don't know how to address it.

You would be correct that there is no longer a warranty on the device. If you have checked the charging port area with a strong flashlight and magnifying glass to ensure there is no debris, dirt, lint, broken contacts, or other obstruction in the port and you still cannot get it to charge, the only choice is to make a Genius Bar appointment at the nearest Apple Store to have the device examined by Apple. They will explain your options from there.

I currently can't find a fix for this issue and my first thought was it's a faulty cord or dust in the female port of my iPhone 5c, but I cleaned inside the female charger port and connect multiple lightning cables, and the problem still persists. I really don't want to buy another iPhone just to fix this issue and since I've had the same phone for over at least three years, I'm pretty sure the warranty is no longer in effect.
