    Hi ..

A Safe Mode boot deletes system caches that may help.

Top left corner of your screen click the  Apple   > Shut Down.

After your Mac shuts down, wait 10 seconds, then press the power button.

Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold down the Shift key. You should press the Shift key as soon as possible after you hear the startup tone, but not before.

Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple logo and progress indicator.

Once you are in Safe Mode, go back to the Apple  menu. From the drop down menu click:  Restart

Then go to your Apple  menu top of your screen. From the drop down menu click:  About This Mac. It should still be on Yosemite v10.10.

Make sure before you try to upgrade again that your Mac meets El Capitan requirements here >  Upgrade to OS X El Capitan - Apple Support

Thanks very much for quick reply Carolyn. I just did that, followed the steps to safe mode and restarted. The screen now has OS X set up logo and icon for back or continue; Apple icon menu top left only shows: (1) Startup Disk... (2) Restart and (3) Shut Down.

I tried to continue installing OS X but it says harddisk doesn´t have enough memory -- which was not true when I tried first to upgrade (had deleted enough to keep 7GB free).

Any thoughts on next steps? I am not very adept at IT stuffs and certainly appreciate your help!

Adding more to what I have tried so far...

After using safe mode, I checked the system info and boot mode is not shown as safe. Shouldn´t that be the case if I didn´t restart to leave the safe mode?

Second, I had used utility menu to startup using time machine and not continue with installation of OS X. Apple logo starts as usual and the installation line below it slowly completes; however, even after the entire line shows complete, macbook continues to stay in that state without changes... I let it stay like that overnight and still no changes: apple logo with the completed line below.

I am lost on what to do. Please help.
