May 7, 2016 7:06 AM in response to mstudby Carolyn Samit,Make sure your Mac can run El Capitan > Upgrade to OS X El Capitan
If your Mac meets the requirements, restart your internet modem and Wi-Fi router if you use one then try downloading El Capitan again.
El Capitan requires at least 8.8 GB's of storage space.
You can check available storage space by clicking your Apple top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About This Mac then click the Storage tab. FREE (Available) space is noted there.
FYI, you need a broadband connection to use OS X Recovery.
* If you have anti virus software installed, that can prevent OS X upgrades from installing. You may need to disable that prior to upgrading.

May 7, 2016 7:08 AM in response to mstudby ericnepean,El Capitan is a 6.20GB file. Even if your download speed is only 5Mbps it should only take 3 hours.

May 7, 2016 9:32 AM in response to mstudby ericnepean,Effectively you have a stuck down load from the Apple Store.
FIrst try this:
Delete the partly downloaded El Capitan file from your applications folder then remove the icon from launchpad and reboot then start download again.
If that doesn't work, try this

May 7, 2016 10:18 AM in response to ericnepeanby mstud,This may sound stupid but are you talking about the applications folder on my mac or apple store? I went to finder>applications and I dont see anything for OS X El Capitan there. Maybe I am not looking in the right spot, so any help would be great!

May 7, 2016 10:30 AM in response to mstudby pmiles,Odds are, it downloaded absolutely nothing... hence the lack of the installer being present where it should be. It does in fact, save the installer to your Applications folder.
It could very well be your Wi-Fi connection that is not up to the task. Can you connect your computer directly to your modem or router and then try downloading the file? You will always get the best connection from a wired setup.

May 7, 2016 10:36 AM in response to mstudby ericnepean,No worries. I was referring to the Applications folder on your Mac - /Applications. While your are at, it I would check /Applications/Utilities as well.
If you don't find the El Capitan file in either of those two locations, then as pmiles said in his post it is possible that nothing has been down loaded, the download has been setup but failed to start.
I would try going to my purchases in the app store and deleting it there, if present, rebooting and asking for the upgrade again.
If that doesn't work I would resort to the more involved in proceedure in in the LINK in my last post, or going to your local Apple Store - not only will they offer assistance, I hear that they often let customers use their wifi to get it downloaded more quickly.

May 8, 2016 12:48 AM in response to mstudby GileS_,I've been experiencing exactly the same problem. A download that should take 20-30 minutes max is estimated at 2-3 days. I've tested this on several computers and the odd thing is other downloads work great. I took a screenshot of a simultaneous download of "OS X El Capitan" and "OS X El Capitan GM Candidate" and the gold master version looks like it's going to be done in less than 20 minutes while the main one is stuck at days.
