Q: No AirPlay in hotel

So, I'm in a hotel. iPhone, iPad and Apple TV all connect to hotel wifi which requires no authentication. Just connect and go.

However, the AirPlay option on my iPhone and iPad is not there, like it is at home.

Any ideas why this isn't working and what I can do to get the AirPlay f

iPhone 6s, iOS 9.2.1

More than likely, the hotel's wireless network is set up as a true "guest network" for security reasons. That means no device connected to the network can see or communicate with any other device on the network, only devices outside of the network (i.e. the Internet).

This is pretty standard practice. Doing it any other way would be a security nightmare for anyone connecting to the network.

Not a problem. There's really no easy way around it unless you want to carry a couple of AirPort Express's or similar with you. You could then join one of those to the hotel wireless, connect an Ethernet cable from that to the other, and configure the other to provide a private wireless network, but that brings up issues of it's own, like a double NAT situation in trying to reach the Internet... it can work, but it's probably not worth the hassle.

Buy yourself a Apple HDMI to lightning adapter and hook the iPad or iPhone directly to the TV.  Leave the ATV at home.

If your hotel is near an Apple Store, you can be watching stuff tonight.

Apple has a 14 day no questions asked return policy, so if you change your mind about keeping the adapter return it.

use AirPlay to stream content from iTunes on your computer

    Use peer-to-peer AirPlay

With peer-to-peer AirPlay, your iOS device and Apple TV don't have to be on the same Wi-Fi network. To use peer-to-peer AirPlay, you need one of these devices with iOS 8 or later:

    • iPhone 5 or later
    • iPad mini or iPad (4th generation) or later
    • iPod touch (5th generation) or later

You can stream content to your Apple TV (3rd generation rev A, model A1469 or later).

Make sure that both devices have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth turned on. If you want to stream iTunes Store content, you also need an Internet connection.
