Is it possible to bluetooth pair an iPhone with a Mac?

I tried using Bluetooth to pair my iPhone with my Mac computer and the number confirmation came up on the iPhone, it paired for about a second, then disconnected, with an error message on the iPhone saying the device was "Not Supported".

Is this expected or should it be possible to pair them and if so what can be done once they are paired?

MacBook Air, OS X El Capitan (10.11.4), null

No, you can't transfer files over Bluetooth like that.

If your Mac supports it, you can use AirDrop with your iPhone to transfer files between them.

Other than that, the physical USB connection will let you transfer files between the iPhone and your computer using iTunes File Sharing
