duplicate preview for same referenced file

I have several previews that refer to the same referenced file on disk.

For example if I invoke "Show in Finder" on 2 identical previews they both end up on the same disk file in finder.

How can I removed all previews that are duplicated i.e: refer to the same referenced file ?

You get duplicate previews, if you are using the Aperture preference "Advanced: Create new versions when making adjustments". Then the old and new edited versions will both be shown in the browser with separate previews and thumbnails. Disable this option, if you do not want to keep the previous version when editing an image.

To search for images with adjustments applied, that might have more than one version use a smart album:

Add a rule "Adjustments are applied". This album will show you candidates for duplicate previews.

You could also search for images with "text includes version 2".

Hi Leonie,

The Aperture preference "Advanced: Create new versions when making adjustments" is off and has always been off.

Creating a Smart Album wit Adjustments set to "are applied" results in no picture displayed.

I am quite positive that I am dealing with true preview duplicates, not 1 with and adjustment and the other original preview.

I have somewhat a lot of those duplicate previews.

Is there anyway to clean this is up i.e remove the identical preview duplicates ?

Thanls

Hmm I was looking for a batch solution as I have many duplicated previews.

Nonetheless, I tried the Delete Previews under Photo menu that you suggested
for a particular duplicated preview.
Pressed Delete on the dialog below.

Nothing happened.
Tried on both duplicates : still nothing.

Weird.

BTW are there any plug-ins to find duplicated previews and remove the extra ones without deleting the referenced original ?

Have you been using any cleaning applications, like CleanMY Mac? That can result in incorrectly linked previews and originals.

If Aperture can no longer delete the Previews of your images, the library contains probably orphaned image files.

In that case it could help to repair or rebuild the library.

That will recreate correct links between the originals and previews and collect the orphaned files in a special project "Recovered items".

Is there perhaps already a project with recovered items?

See this page in the User Manual: http://documentation.apple.com/en/aperture/usermanual/index.html#chapter=27%26se ction=10%26tasks=true

Hi Leonie,

No I have not been using cleaning applications, like CleanMY Mac.

I wonder ... if I had incorrect linked previews and originals, then what would explain that the Show in Finder work on a preview (and it's duplicate) ?

I doubt that if Aperture can no longer delete the Previews that it necessarily means that we are dealing with an orphaned file since the Show in Finder does locate the file in Finder correctly.

Regardless, I did perform a Rebuild Database to see if that would help.

Same problem : for 2 given identical previews with the same file on disk located by Show in Finder , neither of them are deleted after a Delete Preview.

Anyhow, my ordeal is about trying to clean-up my Aperture library by removing all duplicated previews.

Any hint on how to perform this ?

Thanks
