Mail won't receive new mail without re-starting

Mail used to work fine for me pre-El Capitan. Since then, I need to close it and re-open it in order to receive new mail messages.

It will also refresh the inbox if I start filing messages in folders, but otherwise it won't receive and alert me to new messages.

Any solutions greatly appreciated...

I understand that Mail on your Mac is having issues receiving email and as a workaround, you have discovered that quitting Mail and opening it fresh again will allow it to receive new email. We know how frustrating situations like this can be, but we are here to help!

To continue troubleshooting, I suggest reading over and working through the suggested steps from the following article.
