iBooks not syncing with iTunes

So several days ago, my books disappeared from my iTunes. I can still see everything in iBooks on my computer, but iTunes won't recognise them. Also iBooks from my computer is not syncing with my iphone and ipad, and for now the only way to read something is if I upload it to icloud drive and download it on the device.

Also in iTunes - there's no BOOKS tab, it appears only when I connect a device, that's when I see that the books are not in iTunes and i can't transfer them to the devices. Is there a way to make my books from iBooks, appear in iTunes?

I am running:

OS X El Capitan - version 10.11.4

iBooks - version 1.5

iTunes - version 12.3

Thanks!

OS X El Capitan (10.11.4), null

Well after screwing around with this issue and realizing I have an iPad Pro (128GB/AT&T), I could easily load all these books w/o needing iCloud to hold them:

On the iMac:

Created a folder called EBooks - Put all my pubs and PDF's in it.

Opened iBooks and moved all of the content to EBooks - then deleted everything.

(*EBooks is now the backup folder)

Close iBooks

On the iPad:

Settings > iCloud > iCloud Drive = OFF

Done on this device

On the iMac again:

Turn off iTunes completely

Apple > System Preferences > iCloud Drive > Options > Turn OFF iBooks > Done

Done with System Preferences

Open iBooks and your EBooks folder

Copy (Click+CMD if you're carry picking titles), then drag them to iBooks window

After all your titles are in - Re-launch iTunes

Open your device in iTunes - check the Settings > Book on the upper left of the file tree - VIOLA! BOOKS!

Go to the [On My Device] section of the tree, and you can now pick and choose what you want, or just select ALL.

Sync - you're done!

Hope this helps!

No my system is fine. They are essentially caches and preference files (some other files are also in the cookies folder and containers folder) that get re-written anyway. If it didn't work, I was going to create a new user account anyway and start migrating my documents over to that as I'd already pinned it down to a user account problem. However, it would have potentially been a long process.

Just go to your user library (hold the option key in Finder's go menu) and go from there. You should be able to use spotlight to find these files. As I said though, try pulling the nsurlsessiond files and seeing if that triggers sync without touching anything else. They live in the caches and preferences folder.

Probably leave 'mobile documents' alone (I backed mine up just in case). Back up your iBooks library, if it already contains non-books store files.

Do your bookmarks, highlights, notes and current page read still sync between mac and devices after that since you turned iBooks iCloud support off now for good?

(If that’s not the case the process is useless as you can always i.e. email yourself a book on a device and open it without syncing of any kind).

Thanks anyway.

Peter,

you are the boss. Everything works well now.

Here’s what I did:

  1. I Quit the iTunes
  2. I opened iBooks
  3. I backed up my books and PDF’s from iBooks by dragging and holding alt copying them to a backup folder
  4. I deleted all of my books and PDF’s from iBooks
  5. I quit the iBooks
  6. I went to the Settings > iCloud > Options > iBooks and turned the iCloud support for iBooks off
  7. I went to the Library folder in Finder and located the nsurlsessiond folder via search
  8. I copied the folder to the backup folder, just in case
  9. I deleted the nsurlsessiond folder
  10. I shut the Macbook down
  11. I turned the computer on
  12. I opened iBooks
  13. I moved my books and PDF’s from the backup folder to iBooks
  14. I turned the iCloud support for iBooks on (see the step 6)
  15. I opened iTunes
  16. 😁 Voilah! All of my books and PDF’s are there! 😁
  17. I synced the books successfully to both iPad 3 and iPhone 6
  18. I checked the highlights, bookmarks, notes and the last page read and everything was properly syncing

I think it can’t be explained easier than this 🙂

Thanks again, mate, I owe you a beer when I see ya 😉

I tried following your steps, but I couldn't find any nsurlsessiond files or folders on my Mac. I even made sure I did a search among hidden files and folders. No luck.

Hence, even after I added all my books back into iBooks and turned iCloud for iBooks back on, none of my non-iBooks epubs show up in iTunes, same as before.

Any ideas?

Okay, based on your more detailed description, I was able to find the nsurlsessiond folder (it wasn't showing up through the search feature in Finder for some reason).

So I followed all of your steps again, this time deleting the nsurlsessiond folder, but to no avail. When I opened itunes again after putting all my files back into iBooks and turning cloud support for iBooks back on, iTunes is still showing only my apple purchased books, and none of my non-Apple books. I am able to download the books I want on my phone directly in iBooks on my phone, but I can't sync them through iTunes.

Do I have to turn icloud support off on my phone at any point? Also, there is another nsurlsessiond folder back in the same spot as the one I deleted. Is that significant?

Thanks for your help and patience.

Are you absolutely sure that you have followed the steps exactly as I’ve posted? This is a big deal.

No, I haven’t turned iCloud support on any of my devices, I managed everything through OS X. The reason I turned the iCloud off in one of the steps is because I wanted to make sure that there’s no some cached info backfire when I move the books back in iBooks.

It is normal that you have nsurlsessiond folder back in the same spot as the system renders that every time you manage with books in iBooks. The reason why you’re having troubles is probably because somewhere is still some cache lingering that needs to be deleted, in which case you better go to Piter’s post with the more comprehensive hack suggestion OR you didn’t followed steps correctly.

I’d suggest you repeat the same process again, but with absolute certainty that you’ve followed the steps exactly as specified.

Cheers.

I tried toggling iCloud iBook syncing first and had some luck but it eventually got stuck again. While exploring alternatives to deleting the nsurlsessiond folder I discovered this solution. I suspect it works without first needing to toggle iBook syncing.

Navigate to iBooks Folder

  1. CMD+Space (Spotlight): "[name of a book in iBooks library]"
  2. Highlight book and press CMD+Enter or CMD+Double Click on book. If the book exists in multiple locations you can check for the correct location (".../Mobile Documents/iBooks/iBooks/...") by highlighting an item and holding CMD to display the path in the Spotlight status bar area at the bottom).

Remove and Re-add Stuck Files

  1. Move all items with the unsynced iCloud icon (dotted cloud) to another folder temporarily (e.g. Desktop).
  2. Move the items back to the iBooks folder. Start with one if you want to see that it works first.
  3. Let it sync. The iBooks iCloud badges and the Upload/Download list (available from the down-arrow button at the top-right of iBooks) should actively reflect the syncing.
