Does this mean the iPod does not appear in iTunes at all when you connect it, and that's why you cannot sync? Or does this mean the iPod does appear in iTunes, but does not sync for some reason?

Reinstalled I tunes, which was not a pleasant task
If you tried to uninstall and reinstall iTunes, you probably did not completely remove iTunes and related software components. This Apple documents describes the components of an iTunes installation, the precise order to remove them, and steps to confirm everything is removed.

After iTunes is completely removed, reinstall the latest version of iTunes
If the iPod does appear in iTunes, but does not sync, please post back with more details.
