Q: what to do when I plug in an iPod classic and the  ikon  under devices in iTunes won't highlight to make selections

i Have an old  iPod classic and a brand new 2015 iMac. When i plugged in the iPod to download some playlists, I got an ikon on the desktop momentarily, but then disappeared. I have the iPod ikon in the iTunes(version 12.3.3) devices menu, but it won't highlight to make the choice of  manually downloading music. The computer  has not told me anything......what is the problem, and , anyway, how  do I eject the iPod manually if I choose to......

iMac, OS X Yosemite (10.10)

With the current iTunes, you don't select the iPod under devices in the sidebar.  The iPod appears as a device button on the horizontal bar that goes across the iTunes screen.  See screenshot below of my iTunes window (upper left corner) showing the device button for an iPod (circled in red).

Clicking the iPod's device button is equivalent to selecting it under devices for older iTunes.  You'll see the iPod's Summary settings screen.

Thanks Kenicki.....it's such a relief that nothing is actually wrong with the connected iPod..........
