Lemmings game

I have bought a second hand copy of the Lemmings Game for macs circa 1992 and when I received it - it was a set of three floppy discs. I bought this for my wife who owns an i book G4 which uses the mac os x 10.4 operating system. It does not have a floppy disc drive.

My question is if I bought an external floppy disc drive could I run this game on the computer operating system.

Will appreciate it if someone can answer this question. My wife really enjoyed the game years ago and it was a silly christmas stocking filler!

Welcome to Apple Discussions!

It might work under the Classic environment. The iBook G4 unfortunately can't boot into Mac OS 9 directly, so if any part of the game relies on old drivers, it may not work. The Classic environment may not be loaded by default on the iBook G4, but can be using the original restore disks, as my FAQ explains:

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.

Unfortunately even Mac software back in those days was coded for 68k processors. Since that time Macs had the RISC PowerPC processors introduced (which the G4 falls into) so even under Classic/Mac OS 9 it will not work.

EDIT: Okay having read the other responces as I have the 3 Lemmings games from that era and a USB floppy drive I'll try and find the disks to give it a go later this week and post back...

Also note, if the floppy disks are 800k DS/DD instead of the 1.4 MB DS/HD they won't work with a USB floppy drive and need to be loaded from another Mac with a built-in floppy drive that has an ethernet connection or internet connect to bring over to the newer Mac. An ethernet connection would be possible, if the older Mac has at least system 9, or a way to broadcast an IP address over ethernet. AFP without TCP/IP doesn't appear to work too well with Mac OS X.

Yep, you're right that was my stumbling block. I found the disks and manual (for the access codes) and got Classic loaded but it was a no go; the USB FDD wouldn't read them.

The only way I could go any further is to dig out the old Performa 6400 with it's ethernet card, install OS 9 and then transfer it. Even then given that it was coded for 68k processors means I don't think it'll work so I'm afraid I'm out.

sorry...

68k processor coding shouldn't affect the ability to run on a G4. However, if it was coded to only work with 24 bit addressing that's a bigger stumbling block. About the only pre-1995 application I can't run is Ashton/Tate then Borland's Full Impact because once you set System 7 to 32 bit addressing, it crashes with a Type 1 error every time.

Surprisingly, the 1988 Cricket Graph works in Classic just fine, and so does MacDraw II and Macpaint 1.0.

Good point. And there is the other issue that some higher end graphics cards will baulk at 640 x 480 or lesser resolutions being forced on them. That's what happened to my iMac G4 when Realplayer for Mac OS 9 wanted that resolution going into fullscreen mode. Next thing I knew, I was getting artifacts on my screen, and my hardware test suddenly detected a problem with the graphics chip. If this is a program which forces resolutions, I would not use it in Classic.
