Q: Need to connect new MacBook to 2011 iMac for monitor.

I have a new Macbook with only USBc and all the adaptors and I want to connect to a mid 2011 iMac to use as my screen.

MY iMac ONLY has Thunderbolt.

I need a cable/converter to take video OUT via VGA or HDMI and INTO minidisplay/Thunderbolt.

So far I have only found cables that will go the opposite direction.

Is there a converter or cable that is bi directional?

I'm not sure that you can drive a Thunderbolt monitor from the new MacBook. The specs on the Apple page only mention VGA and HDMI.

Thanks- I am a lie to get the video out using VGA into a Dell monitor but hoping to take that VGaA out and convert to mini display so to use my iMac.

I think that you are going to a lot of effort and I doubt that it will work. The Target Display mode seems to be pretty picky and only works well with another Mac directly connected per Apple's instructions. Use your iMac as a display with Target Display Mode - Apple Support
