Sony recorded DVD does not play in Mac

I recorded a tv show on a DVD recorder at my hi-fi system. It is beautiful there. It plays well there.
I took the CD to my computer. It shows up as a read only folder called Sonata_volume, and there is nothing in the folder. Getting info on it shows that it is formatted UDF, with 4.3 GB used.
How can I get this to play on my computer?

Hi Judy

I have had a quick look around on the Internet, and it seems that you are not the only one with this problem. From what I have found it looks like nobody has managed to get a Sonata volume to play on a Mac. Sony really should not be using a DVD burning format that is not a general standard. On more than one site I have read that HandBrake might be able to rip the DVD and convert it to a different format.

I did try handbrake. One time it was able to see the video, and I tried to downlaod a small it of it just to see if it worked. It did, but when I tried it the next time, it did not see the video.

I am a bit hazy on this, as it was a while ago. see posts
I was hoping that something would have been developed since then, but I gues not. I will probably have to play it on the player that works with it, and import the video into the Mac while it is playing.

It never occurred to me when buying a DVD player that this would happen. It was a good price on the player/recorder and an impulse purchase. By the time I realized it was not working it was too late to return it. And so, I will not buy Sony again.
