Q: Specific browser for specfic URL links

At least until recently, I'd been using Safari as my default browser but my employer uses several internal systems that just don't work with it. They both work with Firefox and Chrome perfectly happily.

I am emailed URLs that link to one of our systems. The OS obediently tries (and fails) to open in Safari. It'll then take me a few seconds to recall the problem and then I'll need to work around with a lot of unnecessary clicking to paste the link into Firefox.

What I'd like to be able to do is something like have Safari as my real default browser but have an exceptions list for these annoying URLs, which are opened on clicking from Mail in Firefox instead.

Any ideas please?

I understand what you are trying to do but there's only one setting for a default browser in OS X in System Preferences > General > Default web browser

As Carolyn said, you can have only one default browser, so you can't make it so some links open in Safari, while others open in Chrome or Firefox.  Something you could try, just to see if it works, is go to Safari Preferences --> Advanced and check "Show Develop menu in menu bar" at the bottom.  Then go up to Develop --> User Agent:

When you try to access one of the sites that doesn't work in Safari, try changing it to either "Google Chrome — Mac" or "Firefox — Mac" and see if it renders.

    Thanks Carolyn & Pinkstones,

I've set up Safari & will try switching browser through User Agent next time I get one of my URLs via email

    Hi..

I just noticed your profile which indicates your Mac is running v10.9.1.

If that is correct, best to keep OS X up to date at all times.

    Hi Carolyn,

I auto-update and am on 10.11.4 on both my machines. I don't know where that older OS version comes from...unless I manually entered it when signing up here.

    Thanks for the thought anyway!
