I wanted to buy a macbook for college this fall and I know it is $849. I was wondering if I could pay some in cash in the store and maybe pay the rest later in monthly payments. If I am able to, will I need a credit card?

First off, check out the Apple Store for Education to save up to $200 off that new Mac. To my knowledge, only the Apple Online Store offers financing in the form of applying for a new Barclay's card. This is the link underneath the checkout price for the Mac.
Apple is not a bank. If you qualify, you may be able to finance it using a Barclaycard credit card. You can apply on line though the web site, or in store. It is NOT issued by Apple, however, it is issued by a bank. Of course, you're welcome to use any other credit card you may have.
