In general it is best to keep all your applications on the boot hard drive which is usually the internal drive. Programs purchased from the App Store and programs that use an installer that don’t allow you to choose where they are installed shouldn’t be moved. Programs that use an installer that respect your location choice usually will run from an external drive but it isn’t a sure thing. Programs that are delivered in a disk image (dmg) usually can be installed anywhere.
If you cannot free enough space on the hard drive to fit the game one solution is to set up an external drive as a boot disk - in other words, it can be used to start up the computer instead of the internal drive. Besides letting you free up space by not installing games on the internal drive, it gives you another drive you can boot the computer with which is sometimes very convenient when you are troubleshooting.
A third possibilty is to look at OWC’s internal expansion offerings.
