VIRUS??? Safari and Firefox suddenly opening https://idmsa.apple.com/ pages without stop

Yesterday on Firefox (which was my default browser) tabs began opening on their own with the following url:

Even if I have closed the app, it randomly begins loading and calling this url. If left alone, it opens an unlimited number of tabs with the same url.

This IS not effecting Chrome.

HELP!

This is a scam... don't answer. Even if you have the 1Password app, this is absolutely not 1Password!

In Safari do following: Quit Safari, forcequit if necessary, then restart safari while holding the Shift key. It will open normally:

In Safari->Clear History... delete the History and Website data.

then in Safari->Preferences->Advanced: check "Show Develop Menu"; then in Safari-> Develop select "empty caches".

restart Safari.

Thanks for the quick reply Lexiepex, but it appears that this is in fact a real 1Password problem relating to their iCloud sync. I just found the same problem (5 minutes before your reply) on AgileBits support. One fact I didn't mention, because I didn't think it was relevant, was that earlier yesterday, Apple decided to force me to change my Apple ID password. Apparently, that triggered the 1Password problem on my Mac. Here's the url to the AgileBits discussion.

I was on my iPhone, when my iCloud mail stopped syncing and I received a pop-up that asked me to enter my Apple ID and password. Entered them and got another pop-up that said they locked my account and needed me to answer security questions. I did and then they forced me to enter a new password. Good iCloud fun. No explanation. Nada.

It sounds to me like you fell for a scam. If there was a problem with your account in some way, Apple would e-mail you directly, and it would be addressed to you directly.

You have an iPhone and/or iPad, right? IOS quite frequently requires you to enter your Apple ID and password. You only get an email from Apple if you add a new device to your account or change the password. In fact, after resetting the password I did receive a confirmation email from Apple.

At first I was thinking, like you, that there was some sort of hack or scam, but the fact that my iCloud account stopped working on all my devices convinced me that this was being done by Apple at their server.

Here's AgileBits support's response.

Hi Steven,

Thank you for taking the time to contact us. This screen is 1Password prompting you to enter your new Apple ID and password so it can sync using iCloud. This should open in your default browser. You will see this screen if you have changed this account so can you go ahead and enter that new information.

Please let me know if you have any further questions and I will be happy to help more.

Here's what I wrote back to them...

Thanks Laura. Your developers should know that the way this “prompt” behavior is very troubling. If I ignored the screen (which I did because I was concerned that it was a type of malware), your program began to regularly open new tabs calling the same sign-in. It literally opened dozens of copies of the same screen overwhelming my browser (first Firefox and later Safari). If I shut down my default browser and tried working on another program on my computer (such as Mail), it would automatically open the browser and begin the same process. I could not work using my computer because of the constant interruptions. Finally, I had to delete both Firefox and Safari to stop the problem!

I strongly recommend you turn off this behavior and instead send an email notification to users prompting them to go into 1Password itself to reset the password.

Your post is concise and clear.

You got a horrible answer. Unacceptable.

There are other good password apps. I use eWallet and am satisfied.

I use LastPass, and I've got no complaints. I think I've been using it a couple of years now. One thing I love about it is the password generator, because I can't come up with a 20 character password that contains lower-case letters, upper-case letters, numbers, and special characters...that is unique and memorable. So, it does all that for me, stores them, and encrypts them so if God forbid the site gets hacked, my passwords are safe. Just to be on the safe side however, I went and wrote all of them down on a piece of paper and stuck it in a drawer. You never know.
