Q: Cmd-P causes tabs to close in Safari

When I attempt to do a Cmd-P on a page open in a Safari tab it causes the tab to close without printing the page. Issuing the print command from the Safari menu works just fine.

Anyone else having this problem? Any sense of what's going on?

Thanks,

MacBook Air, OS X El Capitan (10.11)

Make sure OS X is up to date.

Click your Apple  top left in your screen.

From the drop down menu click About this Mac

Make sure the Overview tab is selected then click Software Update.

Your Mac may restart several times during the update process. That’s ok.

Then launch Safari and try Command + P.

If you still have problems, you may have a Safari extension or third party plug-in installed that's causing a conflict. It’s easy to troubleshoot.

From the Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Extensions tab. Uninstall one extension at a time, quit and relaunch Safari to test.

If it's not an extensions issue, try troubleshooting third party plug-ins.

Back to Safari > Preferences. This time select the Security tab. Deselect:  Allow plug-ins. Quit and relaunch Safari to test.

If that made a difference, instructions for troubleshooting plugins here.

    Thanks, Carolyn.

OS X is up to date. I tested all my extensions. Disabling none of them solved the problem. I disallowed plug-ins. That also did not solve the problem.

I have quit and restarted my Mac since this problem first appeared, but on checking just it doesn't solve the problem, either.

Do a backup, using either Time Machine or a cloning program, to ensure files/data can be recovered. Two backups are better than one.

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.

Isolating an issue by using another user account

If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

Thanks, Eric. Just prior to receiving your reply I discovered that the problem is not limited to Safari. Cmd-P in any application produces an anomalous result without printing. The result is different with each application. E.g., in Preview it executes a Save As command.

I created another user account. The problem does not appear in it. Nor does it appear in Safe Mode.

So the problem is in my normal account. But where? And what do I do about it? Should I reinstall OS X? Is there anything less radical that I could do?

    Further suggestions appreciated.

    Eric

While it may not be the cause of the problem, I'd uninstall CleanMyMac3. Cleaning applications can destroy your OS operation. Try quitting the 2 applications below.I'm not sure what they do, but I've never seen them in an Etrecheck output.

Thanks, Eric. I was going to mention CleanMyMac yesterday. I installed a month or so ago, which priced this problem by a couple weeks. I have never used the app, and was not going to until I checked to see that it was safe. I will definitely uninstall it.

DaisyDisk does a graphical map of disk usage--how much is used and for what purposes. I've used it for two or three years now. I find it helpful and I suspect it's unrelated to this problem.

Smarky is a Safari bookmark editor and synchronizer. I've been using it for about a year now and also find it helpful. Extremely so, as Safari's bookmark editing capabilities are so primitive.

Well, I did a complete uninstall of CleanMyMac and restarted my system. I still have the problem.

I did not uninstall DaisyDisk or Smarky. As I say, I have used them both over an extended period without problem.

Does command - P work normally in other applications? Try disabling extensions and plugins in Safari/Preferences. Apple support article below has instructions.

Thanks again, Eric. Originally I thought the problem was just with Safari. About a week ago I discovered that it occurs in every app. It has different effects in different apps--e.g., in Preview it has the effect of a Save As command--but in none of them is the document or page printed.

Disabling extensions and plugins was suggested by an earlier responded, so I've tried that already. Disabling none of my extensions and plugins alleviates the problem.

This may be a long shot, but try going to System Preferences/Keyboard/Shortcuts and click Restore Defaults.
