Another Toasting Albatross

Q: My iPod Classic froze whilst playing music, then unfroze but wouldn't play anything at all. I did a hard reset and it took it back to factory settings, asking me which language I wanted and saying it had no music on it.

The model is 2009 I believe, 160GB. I hard reset as I have occasionally done when it has frozen before, but it took it right back to factory settings. It claims to have no music on it, so I'm assuming some sort of corruption has occurred. I've tried plugging it into my computer, but iTunes freezes as soon as it's plugged in, as does Windows Explorer when you try to access the disk through there. They both unfreeze as soon as the iPod is disconnected. I manually edit my library and have never used sync. Hoping not to have to reset the whole thing as I'd lose 6000 songs; I only have 20,000 of them backed up. Any help or insight would be much appreciated!
