Q: Simple Editing programs that support AVCHD videos

Hi everyone,

I'm requiring your help to find a cheap and reliable video editing program that will enable me to edit my church's services.

So far I have tried using imovie which has proven to be unsuccessful my file became corrupt and in the place of the church service, I have a video that I made four years ago. I own a five year old Macbook Pro which runs on OS X El Captain  Version 10:11.4. It has a 2.4 GHz Intel Core i 5 processor. The files were filmed on Canon's  VIXIA HF G30 Full HD Camcorder

So far, I have done the following:

  • I tried to delete and reinstall imovie to no avail which makes this program not a solution for my video editing needs.
  • I have installed Hitfilm Express with the recommended add-on which is supposed to support the AVCHD files but in my case it didn't. After spending $26 for the add-ons the program will not work and I'm having heck of a time to find a program that will enable me to convert these AVCHD files to MTS. I was told by the tech person to use a software that would convert the files into MTS however he was unable to suggest a program to use for a Mac. So far despite trying handbrake and isoft, I have yet to get these files converted.
  • I have contacted Canon for suggestions for A) video editing programs B) programs to convert the AVCHD files. They were unable to help me with questions A and B
  • I have reached out to other online communities and so far I have yet to find a breakthrough.

If you can please send me your recommendations ASAP that would be terrific. I'm a beginner in regards to creating movies therefore I'm needing programs that are easy to use.

MacBook Pro (13-inch Late 2011), OS X El Capitan (10.11.4)

Your issues are from using an old Mac.  Be sure you have at least 16 GB RAM.  And go with FCPX.  I'm worried that so many different apps have issues on the same machine, though.  That may be showing something wrong with the Mac, not the software.  iMovie should be very stable.  But if you could beef up your RAM, get an external 7200rpm hard drive for your Libraries and media (never put media and containers on a system drive when editing video), you'd squeak along fine with FCPX, which really is what you want.  I'd also recommend posting on FCP.co for some very solid advice from other professionals.
