Slow dock after migrating from another iMac under 10.10

Hi,

After migrating to my new iMac (10.11) from my old one (10.10), everything works perfectly except when I open an app (or a file) which is not in the dock already : I have to wait a few random second (1 to 10 (!!!)) to switch to another app with cmd+tab or clicking another app in the dock until the app appears and bounce in the dock.

The problem really comes from the session I imported because I tested the same thing with another session created on the new iMac and it's OK.

So what's wrong ? I have to delete the plist dock's file ?

Hi,

Anyone for this big problem ?

I just migrated my old (but good) iMac (late 2009) to El Captain too with clean install (disk erased and system installed, not updated) and users migrated process and I have the same problem so definitely it comes form Migration Assistant app.

On my iMac late 2009, the problem is worst because it sometimes takes more than 10 minutes to disappear (old CPU) and during this time the only way to switch from one app to another is to type it in Spotlight. Not very usable...

Any idea ?...

I'm not sure if it will help, but you can try resetting the Dock.

Try doing a Dock restart using the following Terminal command:

killall Dock

Log out/in and test. If that doesn’t work, you need to look in your user Library/Applications Support/Dock for the .db. Use the Finder “Go To Folder” command. Enter ~/Library/Applications Support/Dock. Move the .db to your desktop.

Then try a dock reset.

Applications/Utilities/Terminal enter the command

killall Dock

Log out/in test. If it works okay, delete the .db from the desktop.

If the Dock is the same, return the .db to where you got them from, overwriting the newer ones.

If you prefer to make your user library permanently visible, go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J. When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folde

Hi,

Not tested this solution yet because no time but I'll do.

But one more info can help :

As I said, I used the users migrated process but not when I installed the system. Only when it was installed with a basic account (admin), logged in and execute Migration Assistant.app to restore my personal and work account OR on my old iMac, restore my work account directly when I installed the system and then restore my personal account where I have the problem too. (Hope you understand)

So I think it's definitely when an account is restored with Migration Assistant.app under 10.11 when the system is already installed with an account.

If Apple can take a look to that, it could be great.

So, solution tested but with no result... 😐

I think I have 2 choices :

wait for a bug fix by Apple
do another fresh install and restore all my accounts and not only some during this process (175go on my work iMac / about 2h to restore from my TM backup on my work NAS with ethernet gigabit - 1,5To on my personal iMac / about 1,5 day from my personal NAS)

Hi,

I tried to reinstall El Captain and my accounts with Migration App as soon as it was possible, no result... Still have the same problem with the dock (about 30 secondes to have the icon in the dock and to have the possibility to switch to another app with alt+tab) so i'm very disappointed...

I have a new 3000$ iMac with the speed of an old one when I start an app and no time to find how to fix this problem / reinstall from scratch all my config...

Any other idea ?

The problem is clearly in something from your imported account. It does not matter when you run Migration Assistant, and it is not MA's fault.

Something in that account is probably not compatible with El Capitan and is causing this problem.

I suggest you run Etrecheck and post its report. It may suggest a possible culprit, as it often does.

I'd first post the Etrecheck report.

You could run OnyX, but first try just restarting in Safe Mode, and then normally again. This will clear some of the caches that OnyX would.

There have been a few reports of issues with Duet Display. I'd try uninstalling it and see if the problem goes away.

You also have Perian, which has not been updated in years, and is not supported in El Capitan. You could try deactivating in the Preference Pane, or removing it.

Duet, I use it every day to have a second monitor with my iMac (very useful) and I often speak with the devsabout bugs and co so I don't think the problem comes from this app but I can try.

Also and as I mentioned it in my first post, the problem is only in the accounts I imported, not with a new one created in El Captain so if it comes from an app, it will be in all my accounts... Nop ?...

I just retied in another account created with El Captain and reimported with Migration app and I confirm it works with this account so It's clearly a problem with amount created under previous OS X version and imported in El Captain.

In my case, I use my work account since december 2014 under Yosemite but I have the same problem on my personal machine with an account created in Panther (10.3 (yes I'm old... 😐)) and updated to all the OS X system with a fresh install and Migration.app with no problem until El Captain.

Not necessarily. While applications are available to all users, not all of them run the same.

Each user has its own preferences, Login Items, etc. Login Items in particular can be easily forgotten since they start silently and may not be noticed at all, but still are using resources and possible conflicting with system or other software.
