PowerBeats 2 Wireless audio "slow" on phone calls

I'm using Powerbeats 2 Wireless headphones with an iPhone 6s that is running iOS 9.3.1. Seemingly randomly during phone calls, the audio becomes very slow and drawn out -- like listening to a record at a lower rpm (for those of you that can remember that). This is only happening with my Powerbeats 2 Wireless headphones. Other bluetooth headsets or speakers have not exhibited the same problem. Thinking the headphones were dying, I picked up a new set and it happens with them, too. I've restored the iPhone and used a backup, but still have the problem. I think my next step is to restore and set it up as new, but that's going to be a real PITA.

Anyone have any other thoughts about what could be happening? Any tips on tracing to either bluetooth on the phone or the headphones themselves?
