Q: Creating and managing a Library using multiple computers?
Hi,
Im trying to create a new iTunes library of all my media. I have an iMac at home and a macbook for when I'm travelling.
All my media is stored on an external hdd.
What I'd like to do is start creating the library on the iMac then take the hdd with me and continue creating the library when I'm not at home.
Is there any way to perhaps copy the most up to date library file to each device as i go? So that when i open iTunes on each device it will be up to date with the
files i have added from the external hdd.
One idea i had was to use back to my mac when I'm away from home but this isn't always practical as i don't always have access to a suitable connection.
Any advice is appreciated.
Thank you in advance.
MacBook Pro (13-inch Late 2011), OS X El Capitan (10.11.4), null

The Match component of those services places a copy of your music for which Apple has no copy in iCloud for your use. Neither service does video but if the video was purchased from the iTunes Store there may exist the option to re-download it.
A complete iTunes library has tow critical components. One is all the media. The other is the iTunes Library.itl file which is the database of all those media files, where they are located, and ancillary information. It is this database file that generates what you see when you start iTunes. If you want to go with the hard drive method your best bet is to not only have media on the external drive but to also have the rest of the library there. See making a library portable in:
