Q: iMessage/facetime "cannot sign in at this time"
so i just got a second gen macbook air, i believe it was refurbished, and its running el capitan. i wanted to log into iMessage and FaceTime, but each time a message saying "you cannot log in at this time" came up. after awhile i figured out the email i use for my iCloud account conflicted with the one listed on my phone. a month or two ago i had to change the email that i used for my apple id. this is the email that I'm using for iCloud on my Air (which works fine) and my apple id on my phone and my Air. the only thing thats different is the iCloud account on my phone: it still lists my old email that i stopped using as my associated email. each time i tap my account, a message comes up saying "account details unavailable," and it gives you the option to get a verification code (which i tried but it didn't work either). next i tried to sign out of this iCloud account and into my new one with the email that I'm using for everything else and it says enter your apple id, which i do, and it says "verification failed. there was an error connecting to iCloud."
all i want to do is be able to update my icloud account on my phone so i can log into iMessage/facetime on my macbook air. sorry if this was hard to understand, message me for clarification. thank you!
MacBook Air, iOS 9.3.1

I just checked mine and had no problem signing in. See the following for some help:
