Does this feature erase any of the data on the mac?

I am using Mac mini late 2012. OS X El Capitan

I have a lot of data on it especially pictures on IPhotos and need to make sure I wouldn't lose any data with this recovery method.

Mac mini, OS X El Capitan (10.11.4)

It will erase everything if you choose to reformat (erase) the drive.

Regardless of using OS X Recovery, you should back up all your important data on a timely basis.

You can use the Time Machine app in your Applications folder > Use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac

That way if you need to reformat the drive at some point, you can restore your photos from a Time Machine backup.
