Hi

In some circumstances, it may be quicker (at the point of payment) and/or more convenient to prepare your iPhone in advance of reaching the payment terminal, including if you do not wish to use your default card for the upcoming purchase. Once a transaction has been authorised, the iPhone can be touched to the reader within the next 60 seconds, without needing to hold your finger or thumb on the Home button.

For example, Transport for London recommends using this method when using Apple Pay to pay for train, bus and tram services in London.

Preparing the iPhone in advance may also be more convenient, for example, when presenting your iPhone to a contactless terminal at a drive-through restaurant.
