When I try and sync my iPad to my apple TV, a speaker appears in the airplay section rather than a screen. I have updated the software on both products but this doesn't seem to have helped. Any suggestions?

Please check your ATV's HDMI connection to the TV. Disconnect both ends of the cable and reconnect firmly and squarely. You should also check the other items in the video section here Get help with audio, video, or power on Apple TV - Apple Support . The problem is that ATV needs to ensure that the video it accepts will be handled safely. You may need to restart ATV after doing this. If there are any other devices in the HDMI circuit (receiver, audio aplitter, etc.), they might be the problem, so try removing them to see if it helps.
