how can I hide the tab bar in a new window

I have safari preferences "open pages in tabs instead of windows" set to "Never", but EVERY time I open a new window (with no other windows open), the tab bar is in view.

I HATE, HATE AND DISPISE TABS

I never, ever ever want to see a tab bar.

How can I make this monster that apple is forcing on me go away?

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X El Capitan (10.11.4)

Please move com.apple.Safari.plist file Trash temporarily and test.

Empty the Trash.

Quit all applications.

Hold the option key down and click the "Go" menu in the Finder menu bar.

Select "Library" from the drop down.

Library > Preferences > com.apple.Safari.plist

Right click on it and select "Move it to Trash".

Restart. Relaunch Safari.

Test now.

If this doesn’t help, “Put Back” the com.apple.Safari.plist

Right click on the Trash icon in the Dock and select “Open”.

Right click on the com.apple.Safari.plist and select “Put Back”.
