Q: Sticking cuser

Something that has started in the last few weeks. When clicking on an icon sometimes a ghosted icon appears stuck to the cursor which will move round the screen when the mouse is moved but nothing happens when it's clicked. Also when the cursor is within text, when it 'sticks', it will highlight any text in front and behind but nothing happens when it's clicked. The only way to get it working again is to close the computer down, to do this I have to use a right click on the apple menu, right click again on shut down then wait for the 60 second till shut down. Left click has no effect. I have done a scan using ClamXav for any bugs but it finds nothing.

    Hey there geoff182,

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.

From what I gather, there's an intermittent issue dragging icons after clicking them on your MacBook. Try taking a look at the article linked below and ensuring the drag settings are configured appropriately on your MacBook.

OS X El Capitan: Mouse & Trackpad pane of Accessibility preferences

    Enable dragging

Select the checkbox to be able to drag items.

To set dragging options, click the pop-up menu, then choose an option:

without Drag Lock: Double-tap an item, then drag it without lifting your finger after the second tap; dragging stops immediately when you lift your finger.

with Drag Lock: Double-tap an item, then drag it without lifting your finger after the second tap; dragging continues when you lift your finger, and stops only when you tap the trackpad once.

three finger drag: Drag an item with three fingers; dragging stops immediately when you lift your fingers.

If the issue persists, you can use the article below as a guide to rule out any trackpad issues.

Also, this article will help you isolate and resolve most issues on devices running OS X.

    Cheers.
