Q: Upgrading from 10.5 to 10.6 without retail DVD ?

Hello everyone,

I have been using Late 2009 Mac which came with OS Leopard (and its DVD disc), so i bought Snow leopard DVD from Apple to upgrade back in 2009. I have been upgrading OS online since than and never felt use of DVD till few days ago something happened which one PC guys suffers often. My OS got corrupted and so i have to reinstall back from DVD i got.

Now i am now able to find my OS Snow leopard DVD without which i cannot upgrade my system back to 10.6 and eventually to OS El captain.

Can  somebody help me out here on who to upgrade my Mac from OS Leopard to El-captain in absence of OS snow leopard DVD ?

MacBook Pro (13-inch Mid 2009), Mac OS X (10.5.8)

Unless your drive has a system recovery partition on it (and I don't think that works with older Macs) you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and the special Mac Store update that came out not long ago specifically for it

"Mac App Store Update for OS X Snow Leopard" - https://support.apple.com/HT205702

No Snow Leopard or higher = no App Store = No downloading El Capitan.

If you didn't make an USB installation thumbdrive from the El Capitan installer and don't have a Mac you can use Target Disk mode with, you can't. Even if you do, you'll probably need to erase or repartition the internal drive to upgrade.

    Hey Niel,

I have OS Maverick.app file from previous update last year, but i cant use it due to OS stucture difference. Can it be of some use ? By some how making a bootable thumbdrive of it to upgrade directly to Mavericks ?

Click here and try following the instructions. If your OS is too old for them, not without taking the installer to a computer with a compatible OS version.
