trash instead of archive

I had a Mail notification issue which I have since resolved but there is still one tiny little, nagging issue that I have with my new watch:

I am unable to Trash Mail, only Archive Mail.

Now I have googled the heck out this and have spoken to a baffled tech at the Apple Store here. My iPhone has the correct setting i.e. in the Advanced section of my gmail account under the title Move Discarded Messages Into: Deleted box and NOT the Archive box . Now in the section on my Iphone above this that reads: MAILBOX BEHAVIOURS at the Archive Mailbox mine reads On My Iphone. (pictured below)

I'm reluctant to Unpair my Watch from the phone as it took me several hours to get it to Notify me of Mail.

I guess I am okay with the Archiving but it is strange that the option to Trash is no longer available, it was on day one with my Watch. Thanks.
Peter

Hi Peter...

Delete email. If you’re reading the message in Mail User uploaded file on Apple Watch, firmly press the display, then tap Trash. If you’re looking at the message list, swipe left on the message, then tap Trash. You can also delete a message from its notification—scroll to the bottom of the message, then tap Trash.

Deleting a message on Apple Watch also deletes it from iPhone.

Note: If your account is set to archive messages, you’ll see an Archive button instead of a Trash button.

Hi Peter

With the correct settings in place on your iPhone, I suggest that you proceed with unpairing and re-pairing your watch (this process resolved the same issue for another user).

The Watch app on your iPhone takes a backup of your watch when unpairing via the app. Choose to Restore from Backup when offered the option during set up. Most data and settings (including for Mail and alerts) will be restored, with some exceptions (eg Apple Pay cards, passcode).
