Can a thief remove a device from find my phone without the icloud password?

My ipad was stolen and I marked it as "lost mode" in icloud /find my phone. A month later, i see that the device is missing from my icloud account?

The device did have a passcode, but it was a simple one because my kids were using it.

My question is, if the thief guessed the device passcode, can they remove the device from icloud or find my phone without knowing the icloud password?

iPad Mini, iOS 9.1, wifi only

Hi there Habine,

It sounds like you are concerned as to whether or not someone can turn off Find my Phone if they are able to guess the passcode and get into your iPad. According to this article about Find my Phone Activation Lock, no they cannot:

Find My iPhone Activation Lock

How does Activation Lock work?

When you enable Find My iPhone on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, your Apple ID is securely stored on Apple’s activation servers and linked to your device. From that point on, your password will be required before anyone can turn off Find My iPhone on your device, erase your device, or reactivate and use your device.

Activation Lock is enabled automatically when you use Find My iPhone on a device using iOS 7 or later. You can set up Find My iPhone from your Apple device.

You may also want to take a look at this article about what to do if your device is lost or stolen:
