Q: Help needed with upgrading/reloading iPhoto

iPhoto constantly crashed when I opened it.  It wouldn't stay open long enough to even load the library.   Reading through the forum I found what I thought might work, so I renamed my library (which is over 300 gig) 'iPhoto Library OLD' and put it on my desktop.   Then I uninstalled iPhoto.   I reinstalled iPhoto from my iLife '11 disc.   When I tried to open my library it says that it cannot open it because I used a newer version of iPhoto in the past.   So I checked and there is an upgrade.   Tried multiple times to upgrade but after a few minutes of upgrading it says the upgrade couldn't complete due to an error.

I told my new iPhoto to start a new library, then I dragged my old library onto it.   It said it was 'preparing to download' - then it warned me that there wasn't enough room so do I want to continue?   I said 'no'.   My hard drive is 500 gig.  My iPhoto library is 314 gig.   It obviously cannot duplicate itself on the same hard drive.

So now I can't get to my old library of pictures.

Should I move my old library to an external hard drive, which would free up that space on my internal hard drive I suppose.   Then I could copy it?   Does that make sense?

Any ideas?

I am using OS 10.8.5. This MacBook Pro is quite old and I know if I update to Yosemite or El Capitan some of my programs won't work - so I have been putting off upgrading the OS.   Should I do it?

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

iPhoto constantly crashed when I opened it.  It wouldn't stay open long enough to even load the library.

The older iPhoto versions on Mt. Lion keep crashing since a few month . This is because iPhoto can no longer access Google's servers for the Places feature. If you have photos with locations assigned , iPhoto will crash, as soon as you open the info panel for them. See this User Tip:

iPhoto 9.4 crashing when viewing Places

You cannot get iPhoto completely working again on Mt. Lion.  You can just stop it from crashing by disabling the Places feature by patching the iPhoto application.  To fix iPhoto your best bet would be to restore the iPhoto version you had from your backup and then modify the iPhoto application as described in the User Tip above.

Or upgrade to El Capitan and Photos for Mac:

Apple stopped the support for print products as well.  It is time to upgrade to El Capitan and Photos for Mac, or to find another replacement for iPhoto.

How did you try to upgrade?  use the updaters from Apple's Support page, not the the updates from the AppStore - they do not work any longer for iPhoto.

I told my new iPhoto to start a new library, then I dragged my old library onto it.

This way you did not upgrade and open the library, you imported all photos into a new library. That does not work, because all thumbnails and previews will be imported as separate, duplicate photos. You have first ti update to the lat version you had again and then open the old library by double-clicking it.

Thank you!   If I had known about the 'places' issue before I renamed my library and reinstalled my iPhoto, I would have simply removed the google files.

But I did upgrade from the site rather than the App Store and that worked, along with removing the google files.   I appreciate your quick, and correct, response!!
