Q: My iMac is crashing about every 30 minutes

As you'll see from the bottom of the post my iMac is old - but this problem of it crashing is relatively recent. I recently upgraded from Mavericks to El Capitan and that has made things a bit faster, but has done nothing to stop the problem of the whole computer locking up every 30 minutes or so.

Is this just age? Would putting in an extra 4GB of memory help?

Thanks

    So when you state it is locking up do you mean the computer completely freezes? If so then yes getting more RAM will help out the problem.

    That being said if it crashing every 30 minutes ago and shutting itself down that could be a multiple different things. Could be anything from disk errors or file corruption to even the OS failing.

    in which case there are few steps that can help, like running First aid Through Disk Utility, reinstalling the OS X, hunting down the file, and much more other steps could be preformed.

    Do you have anymore details on the Problem at hand ?

    Hello, and thank you for the quick reply.

    It locks up. It does not actually crash and reboot itself. Rather, I have to reboot it. This  usually, though not always, happens when I am using the internet (usually, though not always, using Safari).

    It actually sounds like that you need clear out your caches files and reset your safari folder.

    This can all be Found in your Hidden user library , which i don't recommend going into because deleting the wrong thing can lead to lost of user data.

    From here i would actually advise to contact apple support , tell them you would like assistance in clearing out your caches files/ saved application state/ and also your reset your library folder.

    ( basically reseting the safari folder would delete everything in the folder except for your bookmarks.plist file )

    then after clearing out those files its basic restart and empty trash , then its maybe run first aid. should actually clear up your issues.

    Post a copy of the kernel panic report.

    Mac OS X: How to log a kernel panic - Apple Support

    There are knowledgeable users here that know how to decipher the report.  I am NOT one of them.

    CLICKY CLICK---> EtreCheck & copy/paste your report.

    ”EtreCheck is a simple little app to display the important details of your system configuration and allow you to copy that information to the Clipboard. It is meant to be used with Apple Support Communities to help people help you with your Mac.”
