Q: Crazy key lag--any fix?

Whenever I type in Safari, there is a lag of at least 3 seconds between each keystroke. In fact, to write this post, I’m typing it in Notes and then just copying and pasting otherwise it would take more than five minutes to type.

No other application has this ridiculous amount of keyboard lag when inputting characters, including Firefox and Chrome. Is there a way to fix this issue in Safari or is this just the way it is?

P.S. I’m not using any add-ons.

Thanks

Make sure OS X is up to date.

Click your Apple  top left in your screen.

From the drop down menu click About this Mac

Make sure the Overview tab is selected then click Software Update.

Your Mac may restart several times during the update process. That’s ok.

    "I'm not using any add-ons" ...

You need to check just in case ..

If no updates were available, since this only happens in Safari, you may have a Safari extension or third party plug-in installed that's causing a conflict.

    It’s easy to troubleshoot.

From the Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Extensions tab. Uninstall one extension at a time, quit and relaunch Safari to test.

If it's not an extensions issue, try troubleshooting third party plug-ins.

Back to Safari > Preferences. This time select the Security tab. Deselect:  Allow plug-ins. Quit and relaunch Safari to test.

If that made a difference, instructions for troubleshooting plugins here.

    Safari 9

Safari/Preferences/Advanced - enable the Develop menu, then go there and Empty Caches. Quit/reopen Safari and test. Then try Safari/History/Show History and delete all history items.  Quit/reopen Safari and test. You can also try try Safari/Clear History…. The down side is it clears all cookies.Doing this may cause some sites to no longer recognize your computer as one that has visited the web site. Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.  Select Library./Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db and move it to the trash.

Go to Safari Preferences/Extensions and turn all extensions off. Test. If okay, turn the extensions on one by one until you figure out what extension is causing the problem.

Thanks, doing both of those things fixed the issue. Turns out Webroot AntiVirus/Phishing had an add-on in Safari. Weird that the add on works fine on my MacBook pro but causes lag on the iMac. Regardless, thanks for the help!

    You're welcome ...

Just so you are aware, anti virus software is unnecessary on a Mac. It's invasive an hard to uninstall.

"Weird that the add on works fine on my MacBook pro"

That's possible if both Macs are running a different OS X.
