If you purchased the songs from the iTunes Store, you can download them again at no cost, to your iPhone or your computer running iTunes

Download your past purchases - Apple Support

Ihave an Apple Ipod from the early 2000.

The first iPod was released on 2001.  The first two models only connect to a FireWire port.  The third model can connect to USB, but only charges from a FireWire port.  Starting with iPod mini and 4th gen iPod, they are able to charge and connect using USB.  So, if your iPod is really an "early" model (1st through 3rd gen from before mid-2004), and your computer does not have a FireWire port (only USB), that may explain why it does not charge.  And if the battery is dead, and the iPod is not getting any power, then the "buttons will not work."

If you need to off-load songs from the iPod, because the songs were not purchased from the iTunes Store and you do not have a backup on any computer, the iPod needs to turn ON and connect to your computer as a external storage device.  Is that possible?

Here's a list of all iPod models.  Can you identify your iPod?  The oldest ones from "early 2000" are at the top of the list.
