Q: Latest SLR RAW .cr2 file not being read?

Hi,

I have just got a new Canon 1300D Camera.

I have taken all my photos in the RAW format, and I have imported these into Photos using my iMac's SD card reader.

I have tried updating Photos but no update is available.

Photos shows all the thumbnails (While some get rotated wrongly by Photos), as soon as I double click on the photo to enlarge it all it shows is '!'

I managed to take some more photos where it stacks a RAW with a JPEG, Photos shows the JPEG version without a problem. If I try and then edit and select the RAW it states that the RAW file is not supported.

From reading other threads I have deleted the RAW contents inside the '/System/Library/Core...' and re-downloaded the latest one (6.19) and still no luck.

I know the camera is new, and I know photos handles RAW photos as I have imported the same from a friends camera (canon 7D I think). But still I am at a lose end at what to try next.

Any help would be amazing.

Thanks

James

The reason is simple as you were  clearly told

it states that the RAW file is not supported.

The currently supported cameras are listed here - Digital camera RAW formats supported by OS X El Capitan - Apple Support - RAW support is not by brand - it is by specific camera - your camera is not on the list and the 7D is

You  can wait (usually Apple release Canon support pretty quickly) or check the Adobe RAW converter as a temp work around if it has support - and Canon supplies RAW conversion software with their cameras which you can us until Apple support is available

    Hi Larry,

I saw this list and I know it is not on it but how different can a .cr2 file be to another?

Second question if I may. The Raw photos I have in Photos currently (that cant be viewed), once an update is sent out by Apple will they now work like normal (view, edit etc..) or will I have to re import them?

Third question (I promise it will be the last). If I use the Canon software to load the RAW photos how will that then allow me to have them in Photos? I do not want to have to export them as a different format (That will lose a lot of data).

    Thanks

    James

I have no idea how different they are but they are different and support is by specific camera and  yours is not supported

RAW support is not by brand - it is by specific camera - your camera is not on the list

The Raw photos I have in Photos currently (that cant be viewed), once an update is sent out by Apple will they now work like normal (view, edit etc..)

You probably will have to reprocess the RAW photo (in edit mode under the image menu)

. If I use the Canon software to load the RAW photos how will that then allow me to have them in Photos? I do not want to have to export them as a different format (That will lose a lot of data).

To use them you have to have them in a supported format - for lossless export use TIFF or PNG - for a more practical (with little loss) use a high quality JPEG

Probably your best plan is to shoot JPEG plus RAW until the RAW is supported - but that is a choice you have to make

but how different can a .cr2 file be to another?

The new cameras have newer types of sensor chips and the raw data dump from those chips are bound to be different .  That's why each new model must be supported independently and that's Canon's responsibility to get the necessary info to Apple so it can be incorporated in the next RAW format update.
